He said the department, in coordination with environment departments in the country, was monitoring the changes in daily air pollution to ensure safety and cleaner environment for the public.

The air pollution detector system, which is one of its kind in the country, works 24 hours and comes up with monthly reports which is monitored by the Civil Defence and departments concerned with environment protection. The Civil Defence Environment Protection Section reviews the reports to keep a check on any problem related to air pollution in the emirate.

Brig. Al Matroushi said that with the growth of real estate and development of industry and investment in the emirate, the department was making all efforts to maintain better environment, safety and protection of the public in the emirate through various strategies.

He said the department had carried out various projects including safety awareness among watchmen of all residential and industrial buildings to educate them on the use of safety equipment to prevent disasters. They are also educated on how to maintain cleanliness in and around their buildings to prevent air pollution and preserve environment.

"All industries in the old and new industrial areas are provided with safety training on how to deal with industrial wastes which could cause fire and air pollution," Brig. Al Matroushi added.

The department was also contributing to improving public awareness on environment preservation which is considered every individual's responsibility towards the emirate. "If we take concrete action to preserve our environment today, we can ensure the health, wealth and security of future generations. Just as the abuse of natural resources destroys the environmental heritage that we might leave for our descendants, every act in the defence of our environment results in long term benefits that will accrue to future generations as well as to the present," he said.
