Yahya Al Rayaysa, the head of the Commercial Licence Section at Ajman Municipality, said that the campaign would also target warehouses illegally storing large quantities of firecrackers.

A top official of the Ajman Police said smuggling of firecrackers could not be checked without the cooperation of the supervision section at the seaports, municipality, parents and society as a whole.

"The police and municipality had fined and warned several small outlets and shops for selling firecrackers.

''Parents are responsible for the safety of their children," he said.

The official said more than 10 tonnes of fireworks had been seized and destroyed during the last Ramadan season.

He also issued stern warnings to some owners of small shops who marketed these items for profit regardless of the grave dangers they posed.

He urged the public, and parents in particular, to cooperate with the police in this regard.

Dr. Abdull Karim, head of the Emergency Section of Khalifa Hospital, said no cases of burns due to firecrackers were reported since the beginning of the Ramadan season.

However, last year, several cases of burns were reported by the hospital, he said, He mentioned the serious case of a 15-year-old boy who had lost his eye-sight, which was reported by the Khaleej Times.
