Ajman Municipality seals houses used as illegal abattoir

AJMAN — Ajman Municipality officials raided and sealed on Monday three houses in Al Bustan area used by 10 Asian labourers as an illegal abattoir.

The labourers, who used to slaughter animals and sell their meat in plastic bags to restaurants, were fined Dh5,000 by the municipality. The municipality also confiscated the rotten meat which was found in the house and the tools used for slaughtering the animals.

Saif Salim Al Shamsi, Deputy Director of Ajman Municipality, said that following a tip off, a team of health inspectors immediately traced these houses and found enough evidence of illegal slaughtering on the premises.

He told Khaleej Times, Ajman Municipality has made special arrangements to ensure that all animals are slaughtered in designated municipality abattoirs under strict hygienic conditions. The municipality, he added, checks all imported goat and sheep stocks in the cattle market to ensure they are fit for human consumption.

Al Shamsi stressed that the health section and also the central laboratory of the municipality is keeping a strict watch on any malpractice and regular surprise food inspection checks are carried out in the emirate.
