Othman Mahmood Abu Al Sahwareb, Director of the Disputes Committee, said the landlord disconnected the power supply to force the tenants to vacate so that he could give the apartments to fresh tenants at higher rents.

Abu Al Shawareb noted that the committee not only fined the landlord but also ordered him to renew the contracts of the current tenants without increasing the rents. “An Amiri decree issued in 2005 by Shaikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, states that rental charges levied on tenants can be increased by only 20 per cent after three years of signing the contract and landlords are prohibited from disconnecting water and electricity.”
