In coordination with the municipality, ATC also allocated 18 stands in the residential areas as well as side road space to ensure safety and security for the customers while loading and unloading the taxis.

Abdul Kareem Al Abdulli, Director of ATC said that the ATC decided to increase its fleet to meet the demand of the residents in the emirate and provide better services for customers.

“Recently we received a large number of complaints from people saying that they have to stand on the street for hours looking for taxis. This increase in the number of taxis will make taxi services more accessible in the residential areas,” he said.

Al Abdulli said the 10 mini vans will work with capacities to carry upto 12 passengers and the 20 private taxis with a capacity to carry four passengers. The number of these vehicles would gradually be
increased, he said.

The fare of the mini vans service is affordable for people with
low incomes.

A passenger commuting within the emirate will have to pay only Dh2; those commuting between Ajman and Sharjah Dh3, and those travelling from Ajman to Ras Al Khaimah, Dh7.

The meter of the normal taxi will start from Dh2 within the emirate but if its going to Sharjah, the start will be from Dh3 and the taxis will operate between 6am and 12midnight while the mini vans will provide
24-hour services.

In coordination with the municipality, ATC has fixed special stops for these shared taxis — near LuLu and Al Manama hypermarkets, Al Abdulli said.

The official said that the objective of increasing the fleet was to curb the phenomenon of private sharing taxis plying illegally between Sharjah and Ajman, as well as to reduce the number of private vehicles on the roads.
