The last strike, in 2008, lasted 57 days
The foundation, in collaboration with the UAE Embassy in Jordan, has distributed 24,000kg of meat, worth about Dh1 million, to 50,000 Syrians at Jordan’s Zaatari Camp. Amaf deputy secretary-general, Khaled Al Thani, said the move was in response to the directives of the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, to help relieve Syrian refugees affected by the temperatures that have dipped well below freezing point in recent weeks.
The humanitarian initiative is in line with the ‘Our hearts with the people of Syria’ campaign — a three day initiative launched by the Emirates Red Crescent (ERC) across the UAE.
Al Thani said the foundation is “very keen” to take part in the efforts to relieve the suffering of Syrian refugees. “We provided urgent and much-needed aid to the Syrians in implementation of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).”
Large amounts of in-kind donations and more than Dh120 million from a two-day telethon last weekend have been added to the tens of millions of dirhams already donated by individual and group donors across the UAE to help refugees endure the harsh winter in refugee camps.
Donations are still being accepted through the ERC, despite the fact that the campaign ended last weekend. ERC chairman, Dr Hamdan Musallam Al Mazroui, said donations to Syrian refugees were accepted at all ERC centres across the country. “You may call 800733 or donate online through the ERC website www.emiratesrc.ae.”
He added that the public may also contribute in the campaign by sending an empty sms as follows: Dh50 to 7050, Dh100 to 7100, and Dh200 to 7200.
