The meeting was organised by the UAE Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Executive Bureau of the (AGCC) Health Ministers and the Global Forum for Health Research (GFHR), Geneva, to discuss recent approaches towards bridging the gap between ground realities and research in the field of health.

The participants commended setting up of a Higher AGCC Council for Health Research, that would function under the umbrella of the AGCC Health Ministers' Council.

Enhancing coordination between the member states and the GFHR to bridge the 10/90 gap in health research was also recommended.

Every year, over $70 billion is spent on health research and development by public and private sectors. But only about 10 per cent of it is used for research on 90 per cent of the world's health problems. This is what is called the ‘10/90 gap'.

The main objective of the GFHR is to help correct the 10/90 gap in health research and focus on the health problems among the poor by bringing together key players and creating a movement for analysis and debate on health research priorities.

The participants also stressed the importance of forming national committees for health research in member states, entrusted with specifying priorities for health research and devising financial and institutional mechanism involved in the demand for health policy and systems research by policy-makers.

The committees will also be responsible for developing strategies to improve the demand, supply and utilisation of HPSR in the context of national needs.
