Active Involvement of Private Sector Needed to Ensure Success

sharjah — The Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCI) has called for the active involvement of the private sector to ensure the success of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) campaign it launched on Monday.

The Chamber announced details of its CSR campaign for the private sector at a Press conference.

SCCI Director -General Hussein Mohammed Al Mahmoudi said, “The initiative will be concentrating on three main concerns, which are Green Business and Environmental issues which will give answers to problems with Global Warming and Climate Change. The second phase will emphasise the social aspects and address issues with regard to the human capital and empowerment of UAE nationals. The third phase of the programme will focus on General Business where the Chamber plans to address problems with business ethics and raise awareness among stake-holders along with corporate governance.”

Al Mahmoudi mentioned that so far the Chamber’s contributions have funded various education, humanitarian, social, entertainment and sports activities and services. SCCI also supervises ‘Tawasul’, a programme aimed at providing education to orphan students. It is sponsored by businessmen, private companies and other organisations.

“The SCCI in collaboration with the UAE Business Women’s Council plans to encourage handicraft products made by the national women, ” he said. “We have sponsored the education of 16 students belonging to a low-income group through their University Education.” He also spoke about the environmental concerns where the aim is to sensitise the private sector on the importance of a clean nation.

Al Mahmoudi said that the Chamber’s campaign would also cover activities involving consumer protection; the use of eco-friendly technologies; manpower safety; performance level and job satisfaction development; investment and profit return optimisation; and client relationship building.

“We welcome the study and implementation of suggestions from businessmen and leaders of the private sector on the effective adoption of CSR mechanisms and support for related programmes,” he added.
