The awards are the result of the commitment of the President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to preserve the legacy of the nation’s founder the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

The Abu Dhabi Awards were established in 2005 by the government of Abu Dhabi, under the guidance and auspices of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces.

The Abu Dhabi Awards honour those who have contributed by their good deeds to the service of Abu Dhabi community, and building a greater sense of community and social welfare within the Emirate.

Nominations are open to citizens and expatriates who have made a significant contribution to building and supporting the community of Abu Dhabi regardless of age, background, nationality or gender.

Nominations for non-residents whose good deeds have benefited the Emirate, as well as Abu Dhabi citizens performing good deeds globally are also accepted.

Award recipients are selected based on their deeds and actions, not by how many nominations they received.

Although there are no specific categories within the awards, important contributions in fields such as healthcare, education, environment, social welfare, community services, sport and volunteer work are generally recognised.

The organisers have provided 10 manned booths across the Emirate, 90 drop boxes, including five digital ones provided at shopping malls in Abu Dhabi, roving award booths and a dedicated award website to collect nominations.

For the first time since the launch of the awards, oral nominations will also be possible this year, and people can mention the name of their candidates and answer immediate questions about them to be recorded to the form immediately.

The screening of and evaluation of nominations will take place from September 24 until December, and the winners will be honoured at a dinner function to be held at the Emirates Palace in December, 2011.

The awards organising committee has also decided to hold the award sessions every two years instead of one to attract more candidates, especially from Al Ain and Western Region.
