While the enhanced abra station at the Dubai Old Souq, which is part of multi-million dirham project involving the construction of two new water taxi stations, was thrown open to the public yesterday, Malik noted that enhancement works are also under way at two other stations. “Similar upgrade works such as the floating pontoons and seating area etc. are being constructed at the Al Sabkha (Deira) and Bur Dubai abra stations. The works at Al Sabkha stations would be completed by November (2005), while the Bur Dubai station will be ready by end of October later this year,” he said.

Work on the two new stations is also progressing as per schedule and the coverage of abra services could soon be expanded owing to the increased and well placed stations.

“One of the two new stations is located near Dubai Municipality's main building in Deira, while the other is on the Al Seef Road (British Embassy) on the Bur Dubai side. The station on Deira side is almost complete and by the end of this year, works on the station on the Al Seef road will be over,” Malik said, adding that while the projects were under way, commuters would have to make minor adjustments due to the changed abra routes.
