A vigilant eye on city

DUBAI — Movement on Dubai roads and inside some vital complexes like popular shopping malls will be monitored by hi-tech cameras in a flagship project to be launched by Dubai Police early next year.

A total of 1,089 cameras will be linked with Dubai Police’ Operations Room, revealed Lieutenant Colonel Dr Khalid Ali Ghanim Al Merri, Director of Communications and Electronic Decelopment, Operations. “The project aims to cover all of Dubai, providing the Operations Room with a direct picture of what is going on in the emirate”, said the official. He said 38 new cameras will be installed in specific areas, joining the existing 26 cameras already operating in the city.

The Operations Room will also be linked with cameras at 13 shopping malls. “The Operations Room will be linked with four cameras in each centre at the same time. Some malls have more than 100 cameras”, said Lt Col Al Merri. The police officer said Dubai was witnessing huge development. He said police sometimes uses helicopter-mounted cameras to transmit pictures of events to the Operations Room.

Lt-Col Al Merri disclosed that the new operations room that is currently under construction would be highly sophisticated. It will be commissioned in early 2006. the main hall will be used by 87 police staff.

“Plans have been made to incorporate state-of-the-art equipment in the new Operations Room that will be able to catch up with development in the security fields for the next 15 years”, said Lt-Col Al Merri.
