In a joint initiative between Ikea UAE, a member of the Al-Futtaim Group, and the school, the furniture company will donate 500 of its trademark brown paper bags to the school for the pupils to decorate with environmental themes.

A press release stated that the decorated bags will be returned to the store to pack customer purchases on Earth Day in the hope the artworks will enhance environmental awareness and appreciation.

Mile Franicevic, General Manager of Ikea UAE stated, "We are delighted to support the girls in educating our community about the importance of protecting the environment. It is particularly appropriate at this time when the UAE Environmental Ministry has declared its plan to make paper bag use compulsory."

The Earth Day Groceries Project was initiated in the UAE by Grade III teacher Mona Abinader, who presented the project to the elementary and middle school section of AAG. The project, which has existed for 15 years, is a global educational programme that reaches out to thousands of schools worldwide through the Internet. This is the first time the UAE is participating in it.
