A step in the right direction, yet ...!

THE suggestion recently mooted by the Ministry of Labour for establishing a big joint-stock company to be the only body authorised for bringing in labourers from abroad, is a step forward in the right direction subject to proper implementation.

The recommended company should be limited to the suffering labourers, mostly those who have a litany of complaints and encounter several problems. These are workers mainly in the fields of construction, services, and maintenance. They have been repeatedly involved in various protests and many are said to be absconding, working with employers other than sponsors, or illegally overstaying in the UAE.

The manual, and mostly uneducated, labourers turn out — as per statistics and reports — to be the major source of all the mentioned troubles.

Accordingly, the suggested stock company should be restricted to blue-collar workers, for fear that involving other categories might make the matter more complicated than necessary. As it is, the white collar workers have been observed to cause no problems, since they are completely aware of their rights and duties, and they read their contracts in fine print even before beginning work or taking up their jobs. What’s more, the countries exporting their labourers must check their competence and medical fitness in advance.
