Due to his low academic qualifications and adequate work experience, he did not shrug off or show any sign of disapproval when he was given the post of a security guard in an RAK Cement Company (RAKCC).

“I willingly took up this job because it was the only choice for me as I had had no other choice at that time,” Mohammed Ali Mohammed Al Shihi told Khaleej Times.

He was in dire need of any money to help his family and start his life as independent man.

“I was preoccupied with the idea of helping my family and start leading an independent life,” he added.

Al Shihi was earning only Dh4,000 from his job. “This was inclusive of basic salary and all other benefits,” he added.

While fulfilling the tough duties of his job, the motivated Al Shihi started studying IT in the RAK Men’s College (RMC).

“I applied to the RMC and started studying IT,” he added.

He also recalled the tough times when he was dividing his time between his job, studies and other family and social duties. He used to go to the college in morning and go to the workplace in the night shift.

“I used to go home after completing my daily lectures to change my clothes and then set off to the workplace,” he added.

Al Shihi also voiced his deep gratitude and thankfulness to the RAKCC administration for helping him complete his studies.

“They were very encouraging and considerate and extended to me all kinds of support to help me complete my studies,” he added.

Since his graduation in 2005, Al Shihi has been appointed as an IT assistant engineer. To help him attend all his college classes, the RAKCC officials assigned him with working only in the night shifts.

Al Shihi also enjoys very good relations with all his colleagues.

“They were very helpful and cooperative and helped me a lot through my educational career,” he added.

As for his future plans: “I am seriously planning to have a BSc in IT from any local or international university,” he said, his eyes glowing behind his thick eyeglasses.
