ABU DHABI — Around 71 reckless drivers of various nationalities were detained for a week and had to carry out community service on the capital’s roads and in schools for 48 hours. Their vehicles have been impounded for a month.
Of the 71, 39 were drivers from Abu Dhabi and the remainder from Al Ain.
The move was in implementation of an order by UAE Minister of Interior Lt-Gen. Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan seeking to curb reckless driving.
Colonel Hamad Al Shamsi, Director of Traffic and Patrols, Abu Dhabi Police, announced at a Press conference yesterday the launch of a traffic campaign under the theme ‘Your Driving is Responsibility and Loyalty’. The campaign will last till Saturday in all parts of emirate of Abu Dhabi.
He said that the punishment to 20 other violators had been deferred because they were students who had to appear for examinations.
According to Col Al Shamsi, the campaign aims at educating the public about the objectives of Shaikh Saif’s order and the danger of reckless driving.
