Skeletal remains of a 63-year-old woman were found by her son in their Lokhandwala apartment in Mumbai on Sunday.
It is not known that Asha Sahani had informed the housing society that she planned to move into an old age home. The Indian Express reported that although she had stopped paying maintenance for months, the residents didn't force open her house as no family member was present.
When her son Rituraj Sahani returned from US to India on an unannounced visit, he was shocked to find her mother's body in a decomposed state.
The mother had last spoken to her son in April 2016 and conveyed her decision to move to an old age home. She was alone after the death of her husband. Her son Rituraj had moved to the US in 1997.
It is surprising no stench from the decomposing body alerted the neighbours.
The Indian Express story mentions the residents kept their windows shut and air conditioners on as the creek nearby used to stink badly.
A case of accidental death has been registered by the Oshiwara Police.
