The arrests were made between March 1 and 31 and all those arrested would be prosecuted and deported as stipulated by the country's federal law on entry and residence of foreigners, the source said.

In February, immigration squads rounded up 414 infiltrators while a total of 579 were arrested in January. They were mainly of Asian nationalities who were trying to sneak into the country illegally.

The official warned that intensive inspection raids would continue round-the-clock to crack down on illegal immigrants. He praised the tremendous efforts made by the concerned security agencies in carrying out the operation to arrest the infiltrators.

According to official statistics of the ministry, the number of infiltrators and illegal immigrants in the country has dropped significantly in recent years, thanks to the vigilance of the immigration authorities.

Ministry officials attribute the drop in the number of infiltrators to the tight measures and surveillance carried out by immigration authorities at entry points, border areas, and at sea, in collaboration with the other agencies concerned.

The ministry uses in its search operations latest technologies including state-of-the-art radars monitoring the regional waters, helicopters and speed boats and heavy-duty vehicles.
