Ajman - While most youngsters throng Quran memorisation classes, even some older people are showing keenness to attend the same during the spiritually uplifting days of the holy month of Ramadan.
Up to 102 female memorisers, in the age group of eight to 60 years, have enrolled in an intensive Quran learning course run by the Dar Al Ber Society at the Shaikh Zayed Mosque, Al Jurf area.
An informed source at Dar Al Ber told Khaleej Times that 11 of the 102 female memorisers are between 50 and 60 years of age. "Three of these are 60 years of age," the source added.
Emirati mother and grandmother of 20 children, 60-year-old Umm Rashid said: "It is really interesting to go to the mosque hand in hand with my grandsons to memorise the Holy Quran."
It is the true and a real blessing in this life and in the Hereafter, she added. "I still remember one 93-year-old Emirati mother and grandmother of 120 children, Fatima Mohammed Ali, who never missed her Quran class in a nearby mosque in Khor Fakkan."
Though Umm Rashid does not read or write, she persistently learns the Holy Quran with the help of her grandchildren and always listens to the verses of the holy book through audio cassettes. "Learning the Holy Quran has become easier with modern devices," she said.
The innovative scheme has been initiated in collaboration with the Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi Centre for Quran Service for the benefit of female learners in the emirates of Ajman and Sharjah.
The drive is part of the 6th edition of a multi-branch Quran course, according to a senior official.
Moza Naseeb, the general coordinator of the Ber Quran memorisation project for females, said participants under the Quran Memorisation Project for Females revise 20, 15, 10, and five volumes of the Quran - comprising 30 volumes.
