The construction workers were convicted by the court, in separate cases, for their involvement in violent protests demanding pay hikes and better working conditions, according to a court official.

The court said in its ruling which was pronounced on Thursday that the 45 accused (in three separate cases) will be deported after serving their jail terms. However, he added, the convicted workers have the right to appeal against the court verdict within a period of two weeks.

The labourers were convicted on charges of vandalism, breaching public security and for their involvement in instigating public disturbances late last year.
