443 street vendors, beggars held

DUBAI —Some 443 persons, including street vendors, beggars and illegal car washers were nabbed last month in operations conducted by the Dubai Municipality in cooperation with Dubai Police and the Dubai Naturalisation and Residency Department (DNRD).

According to Obaid Salem Al Shamsi, Assistant Director-General of Dubai Municipality for Administrative and General Services Affairs, the sweep against the law-breakers had also resulted in the seizure of several low-quality goods, pirated CDs and foodstuff.

“ The inspectors at the Security and Monitoring Unit of the Administrative Affairs Department carry out regular checks. In May 2006, they caught a total of 443 people, including 260 street vendors, 65 beggars, 66 car washers and 52 illegal butchers and fish cleaners,” he said. A total of 1,446 items including readymade garments, perfumes, cameras, watches, gifts and other fake products were confiscated, he said.
