More than 300 tenants of two Ajman towers that were gutted in a massive fire on Monday night will be provided shelter by the emirate's government.
According to Colonel Nasser Al Zeri, spokesperson of the Ajman Civil Defence, five residents - a pregnant woman, two children, a special needs person and an elderly man - sustained burns, while five others were treated on site for suffocation. Two firefighters collapsed due to exhaustion as they were battling the blaze. Authorities also rescued pets such as parrots, cats and puppies.
The fire gutted five cars parked inside the building's parking.
His Highness Shaikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Ajman, visited the Ajman One residential towers complex - where towers 6 and 8 were gutted - on Tuesday. He instructed the authorities concerned to provide alternative accommodation to the affected families.
Shaikh Humaid hailed the joint efforts made by the UAE's civil defence departments of all seven emirates in dousing the flames.
An official at the Red Crescent said they rushed to the site as soon as it was alerted of the blaze to provide support to the affected tenants. The tenants helped by the Red Crescent were accommodated in hotels in Ajman and Sharjah.
How the fire spread
The fire broke out in tower number 8 of the 12-tower Ajman One complex. It spread quickly to tower number 6 due to strong winds. The affected towers had 26 storeys and three-storey parking lots each.
Salih Al Matroushi, Director-General of the Ajman Civil Defence, said they were notified about the fire at 9.45pm. Firefighters from all the civil defence stations in Ajman were pushed into action. They evacuated all 12 towers for residents' safety in coordination with the police and rescue units.
Due to the intensity of the blaze, the Ajman Civil Defence sought help from other emirates, and firefighters from all other emirates arrived at the site.
The operation was supervised by Lt-General Shaikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, and Shaikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman. Their presence motivated the firefighters to do a good job, said officials.
The fire was brought under control at 2.19am. The cooling operation began at 3am and continued well into evening on Tuesday. Once done, the site was expected to be handed over to the police for forensic investigation.
A top official at the Ajman Municipality said Ajman has not seen a fire of this intensity in the past and occurred as a result of poor cladding. Hamad Al Shamsi, Director of the Ajman Medical zone, said it prepared the emergency room in the Khalifa Hospital to receive casualties.
