According to Civil Defence, around 12 in the afternoon they received a call about a fire in a flat on the seventh floor of an old building in the Tourist Club Area near the Blood Bank. The fire fighting units were immediately rushed to the scene and the three people were rescued by the Civil Defence rescue teams, who had to enter the room from the neighbouring flat.

According to Lieutenant-Colonel Salem Al Beriki, Director of Operations, Civil Defence Abu Dhabi, the three bedroom flat was altered into five by erecting wooden partition in the living room and was rented to four families of different nationalities.

The cause of the fire could be due to overcrowding.

Major-General Mohammed Salem bin Kardoss Al Amiri, Director-General of the Civil Defence, said that many of the old buildings are being rented out without following an safety regulations and single flats were rented to large number of people which was risky and in violation of the general safety rules.
