2,794 traffic accidents in Dubai last year

DUBAI — Negligence by road users topped the list of traffic violations, causing 91 deaths and 503 injuries in 464 accidents, said Brigadier Mohamed Saif Al Zafin, Director of General Department of Traffic of Dubai Police.

Of the mentioned injuries, 47 are severe, he said, adding that among the injured were 490 pedestrians, eight drivers and four passengers. He said the number of traffic accidents recorded in Dubai reached 2,794 last year, resulting in 236 deaths and 2,566 injuries — including 157 severe, 727 moderate and 1,447 minor.

Brig. Al Zafin said that drinking alcohol while driving caused 450 accidents; ignoring space regulation caused 317 accidents, 247 injuries and 15 deaths; speeding 245 accidents, 376 injuries and 53 deaths; lane discipline violations 245 accidents, 273 injuries, and 11 deaths while jumping the red signal caused 220 accidents, 261 injuries, and four deaths.
