25pc Rise in Applications for Holy Quran Contest

SHARJAH - The 13th edition of the Sharjah Holy Quran Award has witnessd an increase of 25 per cent in applications this year, according to Walid Al Marzugy, Head of Research and Media Section of the Sharjah Quran and Sunnah Foundation.

“As many as 560 contestants as against 412 last year will participate in the competition, slated to be held on April 15,” Al Marzugy told Khaleej Times.

Held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, the four-branch contest carries prize money awards worth half-a-million dirhams in all, which are to be distributed next June.

Al Marzugy said contestants may participate in any of the four branches of the contest. “To be eligible for participation in the first branch – Full Holy Quran, contestants should be under 22 years of age and the first 10 winners will win from Dh30,000 to Dh5,000,” he said.

“The winner in the second branch – 20 parts of the Quran, a contest open for participants under 17 years of age — will win Dh20,000. Winner in the third branch — 10 parts of Quran — for participants below 15 years of age will win Dh 15,000. In the fourth branch — five parts of the Quran, open only for UAE nationals under 13 years of age — the winner will be given Dh15,000,” he explained. Al Marzugy then indicated that all participants will sit for qualifying tests to check their memorisation and recitation skills.
