Milan — It has always been the endeavour of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and the Ruler of Dubai to have a strong media presence in events related to Dubai, especially with international dimensions. And it is within this framework that he issued directives for a joint Emirati-Arab media delegation to visit Expo Milano 2015.

The focus of the team is to convey the right picture of the event and its activities keeping in mind the fact that Dubai will be hosting the next event.

Members of the delegation went around the exhibition, particularly the UAE pavilion and met with Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahd, Minister of Environment and Water, who presented a report on the state of environment in UAE, at the business centre of the pavilion.

He said the UAE has become the key player in suggesting ecological solutions for many challenges the world faces today.

“The UAE is surging ahead to achieve sustainability and building a green economy, he said. “Though we are an oil producing country, the UAE is playing a pivotal role in the field of sustainability,” said Dr. Rashid.

He cast light on the milestones achieved by the UAE and said the country has gained international acclaim by holding a top place globally in marine habitats. He said the UAE considered water security as its biggest challenge and this was highlighted by His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi when he said that the importance of water supersedes oil.

In reply to a Khaleej Times query on the use of fossil fuel in producing electricity and its ecological impacts, the minister said the country uses latest technology to reduce the carbon footprint.

“We apply the clean fuel policy, sustainable transport and electricity-run motor vehicles,” he added.

“The UAE pavilion at the expo took the world by storm with visitors ranging between 7,000 and 8,000 every day,” he said, adding that it is among the top three pavilions in terms of number of visitors,” said Nasser Al Raisi, UAE Ambassador to Italy.

“The UAE pavilion has welcomed over 250,000 visitors since Expo Milano 2015 opened last month, he said, noting that visitors are eager to get acquainted with the activities and shows held at the pavilion.

The participation of the UAE in the expo as enabled visitors to get to know more about the country and familiarise with its culture and heritage, said the UAE consul-general in Italy, Noora Mohammed Juma. She appreciated the presence of volunteers from the UAE  who are capable of briefing visitors on the customs and traditions of the country.

The fact that Mona Al Marri is heading the media delegation is clear indication that the GCC woman is treated on par with man she said.

The UAE pavilion comprises a large number of local companies and institutions, foremost being Emirates Airlines, Eitihad Airways, and Dubai Electricity and Water Authority.— malzarooni@khaleejtimes.com
