Colon tumour removed by laparoscopy
The operation took three hours and the patient received the appropriate treatment and left the hospital without any complications.
Ras Al Khaimah - A team of doctors led by colorectal surgeon Dr Intaek Lee at the Shaikh Khalifa Specialty Hospital in Ras Al Khaimah (SKSH-RAK) removed a tumour in the colon that was cancerous by laparoscopy, a new addition to its medical services in the northern emirates.
Dr Lee on Tuesday told Khaleej Times that he removed a 5cm tumour for a 41-year-old Emirati man. “The operation took three hours and the patient received the appropriate treatment and left the hospital without any complications.”
The case was referred by Shaikh Khalifa Hospital in Ajman, he added. “Having conducted a CT scan and MRI on the patient, a third degree rectum tumour was detected.”
Following a thorough study, the medical team conducted a laparoscopy for the first time in the SKSH-RAK after completing chemotherapy to inhibit cancer cells, Dr Lee elaborated.
“The new technology reduces the complications that patients may suffer after surgery such as blood loss, blood transfusion and other complications that may affect the respiratory system or ulcer wounds.”
The new technique is less painful, he stated. “The patient was able to leave the hospital quickly and resume a normal life.”
Dr Lee pointed out that in traditional surgical procedures, the surgeon makes a 20-cm cut on the patient’s abdomen.
“Through modern technology in laparoscopy the surgeon needs to makes only a small hole in the abdomen.” -email@example.com
