The Telangana government suspended 24 government teachers for what it termed as negligence in discharging their duties properly while awarding zero marks.

Hyderabad — In what appears to be case of harsh treatment meted out to 10th class students, teachers in five government schools in neighboring Medak district gave zero marks to them in the “Internal Assessment” (IA) exams on ground that they did failed to meet the minimum 70 per cent attendance requirement.

The Telangana government, moving swiftly to save the students’ academic year, suspended 24 government teachers for what it termed as negligence in discharging their duties properly while awarding zero marks. Besides, the headmasters of the five schools were also issued memos for negligence. Interestingly, Medak is the home district of Chief Minister KCR.

For the first time, students in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) were allotted 80 marks for the written exams and 20 for IA in every subject unlike the earlier practice where 100 marks were allotted for the final written exam. Under the new system, students who don’t score a minimum of seven marks in IA would be declared failed even if they secure 80 out of 80 in the written exam.

This is also the first time that the government has initiated such strong action against teachers for negligence in duties.
