Freida Pinto: Dancing diva

Filed on February 7, 2015

Pinto’s performance is already shining through in the Richard Raymond film which recently opened the Santa Barbara International Film Festival and her fans are already raving about her online.

After what can only be called a string of not-so-exciting roles in Hollywood, including her turn in the eminently forgettable Woody Allen film, ‘You will meet a tall, dark stranger’, Indian origin actor Freida Pinto is back with a bang, with her new release, ‘Desert Dancer’.

From the first trailers of the much-awaited movie, Pinto, who played Latika, the love interest of the protagonist in the multiple-award winning Danny Boyle film, ‘Slumdog Millionaire’, is already looking set to make an impression with her cool dance moves and smouldering chemistry with the leading man in the film.

‘Desert Dancer’ is based on the real life story of Iranian dancer Afshin Ghaffarian (played by Reece Ritchie) who sets up a secret, underground dance company  against the backdrop of the tumultous 2009 Presidential elections in Iran when individual and cultural freedom of every kind was suppressed.  Freida plays Elaheh, a professional dancer who encourages Afshin to follow his passion for dance and set up a dance company of his own, risking their lives in doing so.

Word is out that Pinto is depending on this movie to give her a much-needed fillip after a not very fulfilling career graph, except for ‘Trishna’ which got her critical acclaim. Reports say that she trained nine hours a day at a stretch with British chereographer Akram Khan so that she could dance like the professional that she is playing in the film. She has also been tweeting her excitement about the film and about her salsa moves in it.

All we can say is that we are awaiting the arrival of April when the film will roll into screens everywhere. In the meantime, those of you who want a sneak preview can watch the trailer online…
