Pedro Gomez praises his players
Al Wasl, who have been going through troubled times because of poor form and change of coaches in recent years, had League leaders Al Wahda on the mat, so to speak.
Abu Dhabi — Al Wasl assistant coach Pedro Gomez was heartened to see the fighting spirit shown by his players against Al Wahda and felt that ‘The Cheetahs’ will be a much improved team over the course of the League.
Al Wasl, who have been going through troubled times because of poor form and change of coaches in recent years, had League leaders Al Wahda on the mat, so to speak. They could have returned to Dubai with a win for all their hard work, but a spirited fightback from Al Wahda meant that they had to settle for a 2-2 draw in the Arabian Gulf League at the Al Nahyan Stadium on Saturday night.
The new coaching staff took over just few days ago after Jorginho was axed. They had little time to work with the players but the change was evident.
“We are very happy with the result. We could see the spirit in the players. We can see a good team together and everybody running with good spirit. We were also lucky but we managed to score two goals. We also need to improve and this match showed we are heading in the right direction,” Gomez said after the game.
Gomez spoke at the post-match Press conference after coach Gabriel Calderon was banished to the stands after arguing with the referee over a foul.
“He just spoke about the game and did not use any foul language. He spoke to the referee regarding a foul that was committed. But I don’t know why the referee sent him off. Maybe, you can ask the referee,” he said.
Meanwhile, Al Wahda coach Jose Peseiro felt Al Wasl were lucky as his team missed a lot of opportunities. “We actually deserved to win and Al Wasl were lucky. We had so many chances. Our style is to dominate the game and we did that.”
