The lower house has scrapped the Manama municipal council to be replaced by a general secretariat made up of 10 members from different NGOs.

Bahrain has five municipal councils, each in one governorate and all of these are elected similar to the lower house.

The lawmakers said politisation of the council was the main reason behind their decision to scrap the body as according to them it had deviated from its job of serving the residents of Manama.

Minister of Shura and Representative Council Abdulaziz Al Fadehl told the house that such practice of not having an elected municipal council in the capital is implemented in many countries such as Jordan and Oman, for the specialties of the capital from other cities.

MP Abdulhakeem Al Shimiri supported the decision and highlighted its benefit to businessmen to avoid politicising the council, which will effects the commercial position of Manama.
