GCC marks 32nd anniversary

Filed on May 24, 2013

The Gulf Cooperation Council for Arab States (GCC) will observe on Monday, on May 25th, the 32nd anniversary of establishing the GCC, which has become a good model for the effective regional and international blocs. The GCC was launched in Abu Dhabi on May 25th, 1981.

Throughout over three decades, the GCC scored a number of achievements inscribed in its statue, among others, unification of political stance at the international forums regarding issues adopted by the GCC states, setting up of the GCC Common Market, and treatment of GCC nationals as citizens in each GCC state.

The GCC has consolidated the foundations of success for any bloc, such as the unification of security systems and laws, education, health, insurance, pension, trade, agriculture, industry, investment, transaction of shares, the legal and justice field and ownership of properties.

In the area of foreign policy, the GCC states took joint positions towards different political issues and dealt with the world as one bloc. The GCC states reiterate their rejection of Iran’s occupation of the three UAE islands: Tunb Greater, Tunb Lesser and Abu Mousa. They expressed their regret that the contacts with Iran regarding the amicable solution of the conflict did not yield any fruits.

The GCC states stressed that any Iranian acts on the island were null and void and would not change the historical and legal facts that indicate sovereignty of the UAE over the islands. They called on Iran to respond to the UAE efforts to settle the issue either through direct talks or resort to the International Court of Justice.

The GCC states called for international concerted efforts regarding the Syrian standoff to prepare for smooth transition of power that could cease the bloodshed.

They reiterated that the just comprehensive peace in the Middle East would not be achieved unless with full Israeli withdrawal from the Arab occupied territories in 1967 in Palestine, the Golan Heights and some occupied Lebanese territories, as well as setting up of Palestinian sovereign state, with Eastern Jerusalem as a capital.
