2 transgenders to take part in polls in Sindh
KARACHI - For the first time in Pakistan’s history at least two transgenders will contest in the upcoming general elections with a resolve to represent the community in parliament and fight for their rights.
Bindiya Rana, president of the Gender Interactive Alliance, has decided to contest for a seat in the Sindh assembly, standing from PS-115 in Karachi. Another transgender, Sanam Fakir from Sukkur, also filed papers to run as an independent for the provincial assembly from her area.
“In the last five years, we have only seen politicians fighting, criticising each other and making false promises. But I promise that transgenders from all across Pakistan will participate in the up-coming elections,” Bindiya told the media.
Bindiya obtained nomination papers for the areas of middle and lower middle-class localities of Bahadurabad, Mehmoodabad and Tariq Road. The seat was won by Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) Raza Haroon in the 2008 elections.
