Filipino votes in Dubai ranked number one

The Philippine Consulate General in Dubai and the Northern Emirates ranked first in the world for picking up new Filipino voters, with more than 22,000 registrants at the conclusion of the Overseas Absentee Voting Registration campaign.

The OAVR campaign, which concluded on 31 October, was supported by the Consulate General along with cooperation from Filipino organisations and citizens. Vice-Consul, Gerry Suliguin, said that schools and companies turned their premises into registration sites in order to ensure that Filipino voters, who could not make it to the Consulate General, could still vote in the 2013 elections.

The Philippine School (TPS) was one of many mobile registration sites after an invitation from the Schools Organisation for Social Studes Enthusiasts of the MAKABAYAN Department.

Aside from expressing her support for the OAVR, club President Li Naedean L. Divino, stated in her letter “that the only way for genuine democracy to work is for citizens to exercise their sacred right to vote.”

The club launched a campaign through letters, posters, and classroom visits to encourage parents of TPS students to register, as well as the school administrators, faculty and staff.

The Consulate General expresses its thanks for the strong support demonstrated by the Filipino community in Dubai and the Northern Emirates.

He praised the various organisations and clubs that helped facilitate the registration process, the individuals who made the initiatives to organise and participate in the registration, as well as the volunteers and the members of the OAV team.

It hopes that the same enthusiasm shall be shown during the conduct of the elections in 2013.
