CP attends lecture on giving aid

General Shaikh Mohammed attended a Ramadan lecture on “Giving Intelligently to Achieve Maximum Benefit from Aid” at Al Bateen Palace here on Monday evening.

General Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, attended a Ramadan lecture on “Giving Intelligently to Achieve Maximum Benefit from Aid” delivered by Professor Abhijit Banerjee, Ford Foundation International Professor of Economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), at Al Bateen Palace here on Monday evening.

Prof Banerjee stressed the significance of the principle of giving, noting that at a time when the issue of aid is serious for the UAE, the controversy around it continues among the economists worldwide over whether the aid would eliminate poverty or not, and why some aid fails to achieve objectives.

Prof Banerjee presented a number of ideas, concepts, and wrong questions about this issue such as “give me aid and I will finish the poverty, or does aid end poverty, or whether aid is given to earn loyalty, and does government programmes work when aid is provided”.

He pointed out that the right question is whether this gap can be reduced, referring to reduction of poverty through promotion of healthcare, for example, and introduction of the types of training to address the problem of millions who suffer from hunger, disease and lack of education.
