KARACHI ó The latest report on Karachiís law and order situation by the Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) shows the inability of the security forces in controlling the incidents of violence especially target killings as 1,257 people including 135 political activists were murdered in the city over six months period of 2012.

According to the figures released to the media, 27 persons fell victims to sectarian attacks, 84 killed in the troubled Lyari gang war encounters, 42 in armed robberies, eight in bomb blasts and 11 due to honour killings. Also amongst those who lost their lives were 44 policemen.

Last year the number of those killed in various incidents in the corresponding period totalled 1,138, but that figure had been crossed this year and if the present trend continued the year 2012 could be deadliest.

The report also claimed that at least 24 women were gunned down by their relatives, four were burnt to death, four others were shot dead in Lyari and another four killed by robbers, 12 in the name of karo-kari and one each by a stray bullet.

A total of 64 children also fell victim to the violence in this period.
