DUBAI Hundreds of school students from Dubai joined a global movement against hunger on Thursday as they raised funds to support and help the cause of malnourished children.

More than 300 students from three schools participated in the ‘Run against hunger’, which took place at the campus of Dubai Men’s College in Ruwayyah.

Speaking about the initiative, Michele Fouquet-Sukrieh, a participating teacher said, “This event takes place every year in France.

In May, school children look for sponsors who are willing to make a pledge per lap run by the students to raise money and support the fight against hunger.” Students then take part in the walk which lasts for one hour.

The school certifies the number of laps covered by the students who then return to their sponsors to collect the money earned.

“Some of the children told me that during the race they had the pictures of the suffering children in their eyes and that it gave them the strength to keep on running,” said Michele. The annual fund-raising event is organised worldwide by French schools in support of Action Against Hunger, a global non-profit organisation to help malnourished children and provide communities with access to safe water.

Last year, more than 230,000 students from 920 schools around the world took part in the initiative that raised Dh15 million.

“We would love to welcome more schools to this event which is an opportunity to meet new people,” concluded Michele.
