The Department of Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Economy has initiated strict measures to prevent traders from increasing the price of consumer products
FUJAIRAH - The Department of Consumer Protection at the Ministry of Economy has initiated strict measures to prevent traders from increasing the price of consumer products, taking advantage of the recent pay rise of Federal Government employees.
Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi, Director of Consumer Protection Department, said that measures will be taken in coordination with local government departments to prevent traders from raising prices. Action will be taken on 2,545 complaints lodged by people countrywide with the ministry on the increase in the price of consumer items since the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, announced the pay rise for the federal government employees, he said.
The ministry’s office in Fujairah received 289 complaints on tampering with commodities’ price at the outlets in the emirate last year, he said at a coordinating meeting attended by the directors and officials at the ministry, economic department, Chambers of Commerce and Industry and the municipalities of Fujairah, Kalba, Khorfakkan and Dibba Al Hisn.
The meeting was designed to schedule the plans and measures to increase the awareness of the consumers, control the market and prevent exploitation and monopoly in a way that does not affect the profit achieved by the trade establishments and companies.
Dr Hashim Al Nuaimi appreciated the efforts made by local watchdog entities in fighting the unauthorised price hike. The ministry, in association with the local government departments, will launch extensive field visits to shops a to check the prices.
Khalid Al Jassim, Director of the Fujairah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, suggested mapping out a plan to codify the prices of the services provided to the public.
