ABU DHABI - Enhancing Arabic language skills and promoting national identity will be the focus of the assessment project called “Tama’an” (Observe Carefully) introduced by the Abu Dhabi Education Council (Adec) recently.

The ongoing assessment programme has also been introduced to provide students with intellectual development tools.

In order to help improve reading and writing skills as well as students’ intellectual level, more emphasis is placed on text, listening, speaking, evidence-supported opinion and convincing. The project aims to ensure students fully utilise their time and potential in reading and writing, research and exploration, teamwork, familiarity between learning and text, emphasis on language functional skills, reflection and expression.

The process helps teachers gain a clear and diverse assessment tool, which was found to not only improve students’ linguistic skills, but also focus on research skills.

Students will be trained to acquire academic research and enquiry principles such as scientific integrity, patience, accuracy, objectivity, assessment of views and conclusions. The Adec has organised two-day training sessions, workshops and presentations for 200 teachers in Al Tamayuz School in Al Ain and Al Afaq School in Abu Dhabi to familiarise them with the new initiative. The aim of such sessions, according to Dr Karima Al-Mazroui, Adec Arabic Curriculum Section Manager, is to introduce new assessment tools to teachers to help them apply the new standards and utilise the ongoing assessment tools better.

The new scheme includes written tools to measure creative and functional writing skills’ reading tools to measure performance, comprehension, text analysis, criticism and the associated linguistic concepts; communication tools to measure speaking and listening skills; and research tools to measure academic research skills.
