Just solution to Palestine issue urged

Filed on December 1, 2011

MUSCAT — Oman has called the world’s attention to the ‘precarious situation’ in the region in the wake of the Palestinian crisis and urged all parties concerned with the peace process to play an effective role in ending the conflict.

It said the Security Council and the Quartet should shoulder their responsibilities and “work towards a just and comprehensive solution to the Arab-Israeli conflict in all tracks”.

Addressing a special UN General Assembly session on Palestine and the situation in the Middle East in New York on Wednesday, Lyoutha bint Sultan bin Ahmed Al Mughairiyah, Oman’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said the solution must be based on relevant international resolutions, the principle of land for peace and the Arab peace initiatives.

“It must lead to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on the Palestinians territories under occupation since 1967. It must be a state that lives side by side and in peace with Israel and within the internationally recognised borders,” she added.

She voiced concern over the tragic conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories resulting from the continued Israeli siege and deplored the humanitarian suffering imposed on civilians in Gaza, and the inhuman and illegal practices inflicted on the population by the occupying authorities in Jerusalem.
