Syrian army storms villages near Turkish border
Syrian troops on Monday stormed two villages near the border with Turkey, wounding several civilians and triggering a new refugee wave fleeing to border.
The army assaulted Syrian villages of Ain al-Beida and Khirbet al-Joz near the Turkish-Syrian border, said NTV and a Turkish local source in touch with the Syrian community on the other side of the border.
Some 700 Syrian refugees were seen fleeing to the border line after the assaults, they said. Several thousands Syrians have found shelter in Turkey since the unrest started in March.
The governor’s office in the southern Turkish province of Hatay sent ambulances to the border to pick up wounded people from Ain al-Beida, one mile from the border, NTV said, without specifying the number of injured.
Two people were killed and five wounded in that village, the local source told AFP on condition of anonymity, adding that the wounded were taken to hospital in Hatay.
There was no immediate information on injuries or casualties in Khirbet al-Joz, 1.5 mile from Turkish border.
Officials from the governor’s office were not available for immediate confirmation.
NTV said that smokes rising from both villages can be observed from the border, and sound of helicopters heard.
More than 2,200 people have been killed in Syria since almost daily protests began on March 15, according to the United Nations, while human rights groups say more than 10,000 people are behind bars.
