Coral reef planted off Khorfakkan

Filed on July 17, 2011

FUJAIRAH — The Environment Protection Committee at the Khorfakkan Municipal Council has completed planting of coral reef on the seabed. The move is part of executing a project that aims at recreating suitable habitats for fish propagation and growing of coral reefs.

The planting was carried out by a team of professional divers from Seas Diving Boats in collaboration with Marine Environment Research Centre of the Ministry of Agriculture in Al Marqa area. Two iron cages were lowered to the sea bed to plant acropora, the rare coral reef. The planting of coral reef off Khorfakkan coast was seen as necessary following the changes in the environmental conditions in the region, which affected the safety and diversity of the coral reef.

According to Ahmed Saleh Al Naqabi, head of the Environment Protection Committee and the in-charge of the project, said the coasts of Khorfakkan are characterised with biodiversity in which the soft an solid coral reefs propagate. The committee decided to implant new coral reef as this attracts tourists and those interested in marine environment, he said.
