Exorcists lose the spell

Filed on June 30, 2011

FUJAIRAH - The Khorfakkan Criminal Court on Monday convicted two Emirati exorcists of causing the death of a UAE woman in her 20s while she was undergoing an alleged spiritual therapy session.

The court ordered the Emiratis to two years in jail after it found them guilty of the manslaughter of the Emirati woman. The hearing was chaired by chief judge Ahmed Saeed Al Naqbi. On June 13, the bench listened to the testimony of the forensic expert who assured that the woman haemorrhaged because she had been beaten up.

The court records go back to last May when the family of the woman found her dead in her room in Ajman after she came back from Khorfakkan. On information, the police rushed to the woman’s home and notified the public prosecution who also examined the body and mandated the doctor to perform a postmortem. The autopsy report showed that the woman had been severely beaten up which caused heavy internal hemorrhage that led to her death.

Investigations proved that the woman left for Khorfakkan city accompanied by some family members to undergo a spiritual healing session by two local exorcists. They used to allegedly beat her while reciting certain incantations. On interrogation, the duo admitted that they had treated the woman for some psychological disorder, and claimed they unintentionally caused her death by clubbing her during the treatment session. Accordingly, the court ruled the said verdict.
