ADWEA commissions 16MW power plant in Seychelles
SEYCHELLES - 16-MW power generation plant was opened today in Seychelles by Dr Ahmed Mubarak Al Mazrouei, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA).
Donated by the Government of Abu Dhabi, the AED 52 million two 8 MW generator sets were built in line with the directives of the UAE President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to provide reliable and affordable electricity supply to the people of Seychelles.
The generated electricity will help meet the rising energy demand in Seychelles and create job opportunities for the people of Seychelles.
Joel Morgan, Minister of Environment, Natural Resources and Transport in Seychelles, announced that the two generators had been successfully installed and “ are being put on line to begin electricity production”.
He expressed on behalf of the government and people of Seychelles heartfelt gratitude and sincere thanks to Sheikh Khalifa and to the Government of Abu Dhabi for the generous gift of the two 8 MW generators.
“These two generator sets constitute only a part of the total assistance Seychelles has received from the Government of Abu Dhabi,”he said.
“The generation and delivery of electricity is one of the most challenging but necessary undertakings for us because we are a small developing country with limited resources and we are heavily dependent on imported hydrocarbon fuels for the production of electricity,” the minister added.
He explained that electricity demand in Seychelles in the ten years prior to 2008 has shown steady increase of five per cent on average per annum and due to increasing economic activity associated with the success of economic recovery programme, this annual growth rate has substantially increased since 2008; averaging eight per cent per annum.
The figure for the year 2011 to date shows a projected further increase of 11 per cent for the year.
The combine capacity of the 16 MW represents approximately a 35 per cent increase in installed capacity at the Roche Caiman power station.
The electricity power network in Seychelles is rapidly evolving to become a complex production and distribution system.
A new 6 MW grid-tied wind farm also funded by the Government of Abu Dhabi scheduled to be in operation and an estimated 8 million kwh of electricity per year will be produced and fed into the Public Utilities Commission grid.
