Abu Dhabi highway road crash kills two; several injured

ABU DHABI- Two people are feared dead and several injured in a fatal multiple road crash near Samhah on Abu Dhabi-Dubai Highway on Saturday morning.

According to eyewitnesses, the accident happened around 7:30am due to heavy fog and involved more than 50 vehicles on more than a five kilometre stretch of the highway from Abu Dhabi to Dubai.

“All the vehicles heading for Dubai from Shahama were diverted to the truck road because of the accident which blocked the entire highway from Bahiyah near Shahama to Taweelah,” said an eye witness. She said their car was diverted from Shahama at 9:30am. She also said the highway was also closed for traffic heading for Abu Dhabi from Jebel Ali

A number of ambulances mobile hospitals, rescue and safety teams were at the scene while a helicopter maneuvered on the area.

When asked a senior spokesman of Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Department told Khaleej Times the situation was being evaluated and it was too early to comment on the casualties. However, he said details will be released later in the day.

On March 2008, three people were killed and 300 injured in a similar car pile-up in the same area on a stretch of 25km of the highway from Dubai to Abu Dhabi.
