MANAMA — Bahrain announced on Sunday that it had foiled a plot to subvert security and stability in the Gulf region.

“An external plot has been fomented for 20 to 23 years for the ground to be ripe for subversive designs,” His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, the Supreme Commander, said.

He pointed out that if this subversive plot succeeded in one GCC country it might then spill over.

“I here announce the failure of the fomented subversive plot,” the king said during a meeting with the Peninsula Shield Commander and officers.

The king paid tribute to GCC leaders for their keenness to deter dangers jeopardising Bahrain, reflecting strong fraternal historic relations, common destiny and firm commitment to the joint defence agreements.

He pointed out that the GCC is an effective bloc in deeds rather than words, describing the recent developments in Bahrain as a test from Allah Almighty.

Meanwhile, Bahrain strongly denounced comments made by Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrullah. It said the Lebanese government would be responsible for the repercussions of such remarks and false allegations and highlighted that they would undoubtedly impact on bilateral relations.

The foreign ministry in a statement condemned Nasrullah’s flagrant interference in the kingdom’s internal affairs and his explicit attack on its leadership and people. The statement referred to Hezbollah as a terrorist organisation with acts of regional destabilisation.

“Bahrain, the independent and sovereign state, denounces lies and allegations by Nasrullah regarding current incidents in the kingdom which aims to serve foreign goals and studied plots,” the statement said.

The statement also stressed that the Bahraini people who supported their leadership will help their country remain an oasis of security and stability and the kingdom will never be misled by such terrorist speeches made by someone like Nasrullah.

Nasrullah’s behaviour was also described as an infringement on the sovereignty of Bahrain which is a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organisation of Islamic Conference and the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Health denied as baseless reports by some TV channels that Bahrain has refused access to medical teams and aid sent by Kuwait. shamada@khaleejtimes.com
