Hezbollah, Hamas condemn new Iran sanctions

Filed on June 10, 2010

BEIRUT - Lebanonís Iranian-backed Hezbollah and the Palestinian Hamas group on Thursday condemned the U.N. Security Councilís latest sanctions on Iran, dubbing them as ďunjust.Ē

Hezbollah warned in a statement that the new sanctions “will complicate” matters in the Middle East. The militant group, which is backed by Iran, said the council was ignoring the “threat to international security and stability” that Israel poses while focusing on Iran’s nuclear program.

On Wednesday, The United States and its allies won approval for the toughest measures against Iran for refusing to negotiate on its disputed nuclear program. Iran says its program is for peaceful purposes.

Hamas said in a statement released in neighboring Syria that the resolution showed the West’s “double standards.” It added that the West is punishing Iran for its nuclear program while it protecting “the Zionist occupation which has the biggest nuclear arsenal.”

“We, in Hamas, strongly condemn imposing new unjust sanctions on the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Hamas said.

Israel is widely believed to have a sizable nuclear arsenal, but the Jewish state refuses to confirm or deny the suspicions.

The latest sanctions were approved by a vote of 12-2, with Lebanon abstaining and Brazil and Turkey voting “no.”
