UAE telecom market to grow 20pc

ABU DHABI - The UAE’s Dh60 billion telecoms market is set to grow 20 per cent annually according to Mohamed Nasser Al Ghanim, Director-General of the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA).

“The UAE telecoms market has grown from Dh30 billion to Dh60 billion since 2005. The market will continue to grow by 20 per cent annually in the coming years, while the sale of smart phones and deviceswill double this year,’’ Mohammed Nasser said.

The TRA director-general made these observations while addressing industry leaders at MECOM, a leading trade and consumer event in the ICT sector, which opened at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre or ADNEC on Monday.

Making a special reference to the new Andriod smart phone software, which is due forlaunch in the UAE later this year, he said it would be these types of smart applications that would drive the market.

Mohamed said that the TRA’s role was to encourage investment and to provide regulation only where necessary.“We want the market to thrive and we will only create regulation where there is dominance. We want to develop a flexible competitive framework, which encourages the development of new products. However, when new packages are launched, we will ensure that complete transparency is in place to avoid misleading claims,” he said.

MECOM, now in its fourth year, has attracted more than 100 companies keen to demonstrate their next generation communications technologies and solutions for government, healthcare, hospitality, banking and finance, oil and gas, real estate, retail, manufacturing, logistics and media sectors.
