IPU accepts Interim Arab Parliament as observer member

Filed on March 28, 2010

Bangkok - The Governing Council of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, (IPU) in its first session, with the attendance of AbdulAziz Abdullah Al Ghurair, Chairman of the Federal National Council, has given approval to a number of decisions.

Al Ghurair, in a speech before the parliamentary delegations participating in the 122nd meetings session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, currently being held in Bangkok, said that UAE believes that Iran’s occupation of three UAE islands of Greater and Lesser Tunb and Abu Musa is a waste of the principles of good governance since UAE calls to resolve the dispute by peaceful means in conformity with the norms of international law and the Charter of the United Nations.

In this regard he suggested holding an international parliamentary conference specialized in good governance in the management of international relations. He also demanded the ruling Council of IPU to study “Role of Parliamentarians” in resolving differences and political conflicts between States especially in light of the complexities of international relations and the extension of areas of conflict to all regions of the world.

Among these decisions is to accept the Interim Arab Parliament as an observer member of the Union, to renew memberships of the parliaments of Djibouti, Guinea-Bissau and Malawi, and to accept the application for membership of Seychelles.

Mr. Anders B. Johnsson, Secretary General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union presented a report regarding various items of the provisional agenda, such as, human rights, climate change, world financial crisis, cooperation with the United Nations, and many other subjects and reports.

The second sitting will take place on Thursday 1st April, 2010.
