ABU DHABI - Human cloning and research and experiments related to it, as well as use of technology for the purpose, have been banned in the country.

The law promulgated by the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, on Tuesday, also disallows human organ transplants unless it is ensured that the transplantation will cause no harm to the patient.

Further, the law bans use of technology for fertility treatment for women or implanting of embryo in the woman’s womb without the written consent of both the husband and wife.

Under the law, a gynecologist can carry out an abortion only if the pregnancy endangers the life of the woman and if the foetus is congenitally deformed.

The law, however, does not sanction arrest of doctors or allow their detention during investigation or proceedings related to medical errors.
