A380 lands in the city
DUBAI - Hundreds of planes land at Dubai International Airport every day but Emirates Airline's eagerly anticipated super jumbo created a special moment when it landed just after 5.30 pm on Tuesday.
Dominating the skyline as it approached the airport from the Airport Expo side, the double decker Airbus A380 was unmistakable.
Aviation fans outside the airport shouted with glee and waved excitedly at the plane as it majestically dropped height and circled around the airport for a short show before it landed.
Several families, including eleven-year-old Dhanin Anoop Asarpota who aspires to be a pilot, waited patiently in the sweltering heat for at least an hour at the Airport Expo parking lot to get a glimpse of the much touted A-380 Emirates flight.
'I want to become a pilot and I love planes. That is the reason why I am here to watch the A-380 land,' said the bespectacled Grade VII pupil. 'This is a super jumbo, double decker plane and I have seen it only on television. It is very exciting that we (Dubai) now have one of our own. I wish I can fly this plane when I grow up,' said Dhanin. Nishika, another student who had come with her family, said that she hope to fly in it sometime.
Marlin, Karen and Kalina Pupp, who had also come to view the A-380 land, said they had heard about the plane for many days and were intrigued by it. 'It was really exciting to watch it. We have been hearing about it for so long and we wanted to see what is different about this. It is great Dubai owns such a flight since it is fuel efficient,' said the businessman, adding that it was practical for his company to fly in the A380 because it was a long haul destination flight.
A few employees had also taken time off to watch the landing. Anand CK, a FMCG employee, observed, 'Watching it land is such a pleasure and the Airport Expo is a good viewing point,' taking some snaps from his mobile.
Dubai International Airport and Emirates Airline virtually rolled out the red carpet and amid paparazzi flashes, the star of the show taxied in.
Meanwhile, inside the airport terminal at the Departures food court, only a couple of passengers realized the plane was landing, shouting 'A380, now I've seen it', before rushing off to board their flight.
The plane was only visible for a few moments as it flew overhead and landed behind the future Terminal 3 building.
For airport staff Hanane Ezzahi and Imani Tayche, it was just another flight serving as the background to their coffee-break.
'It's routine for us, but I didn't realize that was the A380 - its good it's here now.'
The Airbus A380 was delivered in Hamburg, Germany to the airline this week and is the first of 58 planes Emirates has ordered which will call Dubai International Airport home.
